Our experience

The Academy hands its whole weekend over to bugs. Roach Races run twice a day in the auditorium, which is exactly as good as it sounds, and entomologists take groups out onto the Parkway three times a day to find what is actually living in the planters. Inside, staff pull rare specimens from the Academy's collection and demonstrate bug pinning, there is a bug storytime, and kids can design their own insect and paint into a mural with artist Manuela Guillen. It is all included with admission, and it is indoors and air conditioned.

Roach races, bug walks with entomologists, and the Academy's insect collection out on tables

The Academy of Natural Sciences gives over a full weekend to insects. The centerpiece is the Roach Races, run twice a day in the auditorium, alongside Bugs on the Big Screen and a bug storytime. Entomologists lead Bug Walks out onto the Parkway three times a day to find what is actually living there, and back inside, staff bring out rare and newly discovered specimens from the Academy's entomology collection and demonstrate bug pinning. Kids can design their own insect in the Busy Bees Kids Zone and add to a paint-by-numbers mural with artist Manuela Guillen. Everything is included with general admission, and the whole thing is indoors and air conditioned.
