The 31st annual Mid-Autumn Festival closes 10th Street by the Chinatown Friendship Gate for eight hours. Lion dances, Chinese opera, martial arts demonstrations, carnival games, free arts and crafts, and the mooncake eating contest. The day ends at 7 PM with a dragon dance, a lion dance and a lantern parade through Chinatown. Asian Americans United started the festival in 1996 with its middle school students, and the core leadership is still young people: more than 300 high school volunteers spend months coordinating the stage, the carnival, the volunteers and the fundraising. Admission is free; carnival games and food are pay as you go.
