Our experience

The American Swedish Historical Museum, a 1920s landmark at the edge of FDR Park, marks the solstice the Swedish way. The afternoon is built around raising the maypole and dancing around it, with live folk music, flower crowns to wear, and smörgåstårta to try, which turns out to be a savory sandwich cake, layers of bread and fillings frosted to look like dessert. Kids can take a turn at Kubb and other lawn games on the grounds, and your ticket gets you into the museum too. It starts at four, so it is an easy late-afternoon outing. Kids 5 to 12 are $5, under 5 free.
