March is doing that thing where it's technically spring but nobody believes it yet. Good news: this weekend has something for every energy level — a free community art day in South Philly, First Friday on the waterfront, a free music class for the little ones, and a shark tooth dig at the Wagner.

Saturday · 12 PM
American Swedish Historical Museum · South Philadelphia · · All ages
🟢Free · Walk-ins welcome (RSVP helps them plan) · Free parking along Pattison Ave · Food vendors on site
The American Swedish Historical Museum is teaming up with SEAMAAC for a free community day to close out their Indivisible exhibition. Your kid can help build a collaborative mosaic, paint pots, and plant seeds — all led by SEAMAAC teaching artists. The museum is tucked inside FDR Park off Pattison Ave — free street parking, easy in and out. Admission is free for the event, and there will be food and drink vendors if you want to grab something. Big bags aren't allowed in the galleries but there are lockers downstairs. It's the kind of afternoon where you show up, make something together, and leave with dirt under your fingernails in a good way.

Friday · 4 – 9 PM
Cherry Street Pier · Old City · · All ages
🟢Free, just show up · Stroller-friendly · Bundle up — low 40s · Parking is $20 in DRWC lots or try street parking on Columbus Blvd
Two new exhibitions open this month: How Water Moves (an outdoor piece about rivers and storytelling) and The Creative Alliance Show, which features work from 40+ local artists. The resident artist studios are open too, so your kid can watch people actually making stuff. Heads up: it's partly outdoor and Friday's looking cold — low 40s — so layer up and bring hats and gloves. There are concessions out on the patio deck — Irv's ice cream, Philly tacos, and a bar — but it can get crowded, so bring snacks for the kids just in case. Parking is $20 flat in the DRWC lots at Market or Lombard, or you can try street parking along Columbus Blvd. Penn's Landing construction has wiped out some of the closer spots, so give yourself a few extra minutes. The sweet spot with kids is probably 4–6 before it gets too crowded.
Saturday · 10:30 AM
Philadelphia City Institute · Rittenhouse · · Ages 0–5
🟢Free · No registration · Street parking around Rittenhouse is tough on weekends — try the garage on 19th & Chestnut or take SEPTA
A free monthly music class right on Rittenhouse Square at the Philadelphia City Institute library (19th & Locust). Miss Molly mixes early literacy with music — think instruments, sing-alongs, and movement. Perfect for the under-5 crowd, babies included. No signup, just show up. It runs about 30–45 minutes. The series wraps up April 4, so catch it while you can.

Wagner Free Institute of Science · North Philadelphia · · Ages 5+
🟢Free (suggested donation) · Walk-ins welcome · Free parking on Montgomery Ave · Not wheelchair accessible (stairs)
The Wagner does a First Saturday open house every month, and this one is the Natural History Road Show. Your kid can bring rocks, shells, fossils — whatever they've collected — and have actual scientists tell them what it is. There's also a shark tooth dig where they can take one home. The building is a National Historic Landmark and the collection inside is wild. No coat check, so travel light. Free parking on Montgomery Ave with no time limit.

Please Touch Museum · West Philadelphia · · All ages
🟡$24/person (ages 1+) · Tickets required in advance · Parking is $18 in their gated lot
Please Touch Museum is going all-in on the Festival of Colors — artmaking, storytelling, and music that highlight the traditions of Holi. Tickets are $24 for everyone ages 1+, so it's not cheap, but it's a full day if you want it to be. Book in advance, tickets are non-refundable (but you can change dates within 7 days). If their lot is full, street parking around Fairmount Park can be tricky — budget extra time.

Free community cooking classes · All ages · Every other Tuesday, 5:30–7:30 PM
Vetri Community Partnership runs free hands-on cooking classes out of their teaching kitchen on Spring Garden Street. All ages, all skill levels — you show up, you cook, you eat. We took Charlotte and her cousins to one and they learned kitchen safety and worked together to make a shared dinner. It was the kind of thing where kids feel like they actually did something real. Registration opens a week before each class and spots fill up, so set a reminder. They serve over 30,000 people a year across Philly and Camden, and the whole vibe is warm and welcoming — no pretense, just good food.
