By now you have heard the World Cup is in town. It is hard to miss, with the matches at the Linc and the free Fan Festival running all month up at Lemon Hill (worth a look if you want in, though you do have to register for each day). If you have already had your fill of soccer, this one is for you. Here is a weekend that has nothing to do with the Cup, and it is all free. Odunde, the largest African American street festival in the country, takes over 16 blocks of South Philly on Sunday for its 51st year, right as the city heads into Juneteenth week. Then it gets gentler: a working farm opens its gates for a morning about bees, a rooftop in University City plays a free family movie, and Bartram's Garden marks Juneteenth with a calm riverside celebration and free bikes.

Sunday · 10 AM – 8 PM
South Street & Grays Ferry Ave · South Philly · · All ages
🟡Half a million people across 16 blocks · Take the Broad Street Line, parking is rough · Pick a meetup spot before you dive in
It is Philly's biggest party, and it has been for 51 years. Odunde takes over 16 blocks of South Philly with two stages of drumming and dance, a marketplace of vendors from across Africa, the Caribbean, and Brazil, and the food to match. The heart of the day is the procession from 23rd and South down to the Schuylkill, where they leave fruit and flowers for Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of the river. It gets crowded, so go early with little ones and agree on a meetup spot before you dive in.

Markward Playground · Fitler Square · Sunday · open daily
Get picks like these every Thursday. Join 1,000+ Philly parents.
The procession ends down by the river, and a few blocks north there is a shaded, fenced playground at 25th and Pine where the kids can run it off away from the crowds. Free and stroller-easy.

Saturday · 10 AM – 3 PM
Fox Chase Farm · Far Northeast · · All ages
🟡Way up in the Far Northeast, so budget drive time · On-site parking · Free entry, a few extras are a couple bucks · Wear yellow or dress like a bee
Fox Chase Farm has been a working farm since 1762, and it only opens to the public a few days a year. BeeFest is one of them, and it is free. There are live beekeeping demos at 11 and 2, hayrides, face painting, a pollinator market, a build-a-bee kite, and farm animals to meet, with a library storytime at 1 for the little ones. It is a hike up to the Far Northeast, but it is a genuine farm day inside the city. Wear yellow or come dressed like a bee.

Saturday · Noon
Sunset Social at Cira Green · University City · · Best for ages 4+
🟢Free, just show up · Bring a blanket or camp chair, and a jacket · Come early for a good spot · Cheap food and drink specials, pay as you go
Sunset Social, the rooftop spot up on Cira Green, runs free Saturday movie matinees on a 60-foot screen with the skyline and the river right behind it, and June 13 is The Mitchells vs. The Machines. We went last summer with our daughter and her classmate, and honestly they spent more time running around than watching, which is sort of the point: there is plenty of room to roam up there, and the view over the river is the real draw. It starts at noon, it is free, and they run cheap food and drink specials, like $3 cheeseburgers and $2 hot dogs. Bring a blanket or a chair, maybe a jacket, get there early, and yes, dogs are welcome.

Sunday · 12 – 4 PM
Bartram's Garden · Southwest Philly · · All ages
🟢Free and low-key · Free walk-up bikes 11–3, register ahead for weather alerts · Riverside Bartram's Mile is stroller-easy
If Odunde feels like a lot with little kids, Bartram's Garden is the calmer way to mark the weekend. Their Juneteenth Jubilee runs noon to four with live performances, storytelling, lawn games, free workshops, and vendors, right on the river in Southwest Philly. The Bicycle Coalition also runs free walk-up bike rentals from 11 to 3, helmets included, so you can ride the flat riverside Bartram's Mile before or after.

🤸 Gymnastics classes · Toddler to teen · Weeknights & Sundays
Lemiya Shaat found the Tony Simeti School of Gymnastics online when she was 12, trained there, and was soon teaching beginner classes alongside Tony, who had run the place since 1974. When he retired during the pandemic he passed her the equipment, and she reopened the gym in Juniata with his name still on the door, her sister running the snack shop. The classes stay small, capped at 12, and affordable, with sibling, military, and first-responder discounts. They run toddler through teen, beginner to advanced, including a class for kids with autism, and new students get a free trial.
Learn more →That is your weekend, and the nice surprise is every single pick this week is free to walk into. If the big crowds are not your speed, the farm, the rooftop movie, and Bartram's are the gentler ones. If you make it out to something, hit reply and tell us how it went. We read every message. Happy Juneteenth weekend, and see you next Thursday. TinyJawns 🏠
