The Caribbean Festival Turns 40, Seven Ice Cream Shops on One Block, and a Creek Truck

Cherry Street Pier is running two big free festivals back to back this weekend. India's Independence Day on Saturday afternoon, the 40th Philadelphia Caribbean Festival all day Sunday. Same covered pier, completely different food. Everything else piles onto Saturday, so we spread the rest across the city. Sunday carries the only real rain risk, and a covered pier handles that better than most places.

Forty years in, and it is still free to walk into. Eight hours of reggae, soca, steel band and jazz on the pier, a marketplace of Caribbean food, fashion and jewelry, and a Caribbean Children's Village with face painting, bead-making, balloon animals and beanbag games. The music builds through the afternoon, so if you have little ones, come early and eat first. It doubles as a scholarship fundraiser for students of Caribbean descent.
